War in the Pacific

 After the capture of Saipan in July of 1944, the Japanese civilians that were manipulated by the Japanese military that if captured by the American troops, they would be killed and abused. Many resorted to jumping off of this cliff just to evade the troops. Hence the name, Suicide Cliff.
